The Challenge:
The Silver Street Bridge in Ashland, Nebraska needed major repairs. The existing steel-truss bridge needed extensive improvements that would be costly, and simply making repairs would be a short-term fix to a long-term problem.

The Solution:
Our Transportation team was brought in to replace the bridge. We provided design, permitting, and construction observation services for this bridge replacement project. The existing steel truss bridge is being replaced with a new 350-foot, triple span NU1600 pre-stressed concrete girder bridge that will serve Ashland for a long time. The new bridge includes a 28’ wide roadway with a 7’ wide sidewalk, concrete piers on steel piling, and concrete/sheet pile abutments.

Project Benefits:
The bridge replacement project prioritizes the safety of Ashland residents and travelers who cross the Silver Street Bridge. To gain public support, we worked closely with the city to incorporate their vision for the bridge. For example, the city requested additional aesthetic features for the bridge. We designed new aesthetic railing and ornamental lighting to match the nearby downtown area – changes all coordinated with NDOT. We were diligent in making sure the design reflected the vision of the city and its residents, and as a result provided a design that is not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing.
