project description

The University of Nebraska Medical Center Munroe-Meyer Institute’s dedication to providing comprehensive care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is evidenced in a new aquatics facility designed to create an inclusive environment.

The facility features two indoor therapy pools and an adjacent indoor splash park separated by glass walls, allowing natural light and space for family activities during therapy sessions in the pools. The splash park incorporates “memorial sprays” from the original facility, providing comfort to families and patients adjusting to the new setting. The indoor therapy pools allow for a range of aquatic programs, from swim lessons to therapeutic sessions for all ages. A lap pool with waterslides, volleyball, basketball and aquatic transfer systems caters to various fitness and therapy needs. Additionally, the facility has a raised therapy pool designed to facilitate aquatic therapy, allowing therapists to interact with clients without entering the water.

The design includes consideration for efficiency and maintenance. Multiple heaters and interchangeable pumps ensure minimal downtime, and UV and standard disinfection equipment maintain water quality. This aquatic haven is further enhanced by color and finish choices carefully selected with sensory needs in mind.
