South Sioux City faced unique challenges when they needed to construct their own wastewater treatment facility and find a location for the facility to serve the community in the future. They also needed to determine how to secure funding for such a significant project. The City partnered with HDR and JEO to evaluate their needs, ultimately moving forward with a solution that balanced environmental sustainability and economic feasibility. JEO was key in helping source funding options and ensuring the project was financially viable while meeting long-term goals.
The new wastewater treatment facility combines anaerobic lagoons with advanced Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) technology, a cutting-edge and emerging process, to efficiently treat wastewater while protecting the Missouri River. As the first facility of its type in Nebraska and one of only a few in the entire country, it is uniquely designed to handle industrial wastewater. The facility also captures biogas as a renewable energy source, minimizing environmental impact.
This state-of-the-art facility’s modern design provides lower maintenance costs and greater efficiency. Impressively, the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget through careful planning and collaboration.
