A New Chapter for Marengo
For nearly 50 years, the swimming pool next to the American Legion Post stood as a summer staple in Marengo, IA. A place where childhood memories were made, friendships formed, and the community came together. Despite the loving care and attention since its initial opening in 1975, time took its toll.
Our team completed a thorough evaluation, and it became clear the aging pool was not only in need of major costly repairs, but the growing City required a recreational amenity that reflected their present and future. What some may have labeled as an ending of an era, Marengo knew they needed the right partner who also saw what they saw, an opportunity to open a new chapter. We’re thankful for the trust that was instilled in our team to partner with the City of Marengo through this process.
Our design team worked with the community to support the selection of a new site, as well as identifying their facility needs and desires based on community feedback. With a site selected and valuable insight, we created a personalized and compact solution meeting expectations. The new facility was designed to utilize minimal water surface area to support ease of maintenance, staffing and budget needs. Don’t let its size fool you, this layout packs a punch on aquatic offerings and amenities. We ensured each square foot of water would have the ability to flex. Providing multiple uses to a variety of users through the various times of the day.
Inclusivity and accessibility were also a must. Expanded parking adjacent to the pool and along the nearby street supports ease of access. The bathhouse and mechanical buildings were also developed with a focus on how staff and guests would use and interact with these spaces. The bathhouse combined admissions, concessions and an exterior accessible restroom allows for flex use beyond the pool. Providing support for special events such as the adjacent school’s game days in the fall, and for guests of the nearby park throughout the year.
To help bring this vision to life, our team developed renderings and materials that were also able to support Marengo through their funding journey. Thanks to the generosity of local grants, community fundraising and an anonymous donor, the dream of a new aquatic center quickly became a reality!
The support didn’t stop there. Compass Memorial Hospital also stepped up with a pledge for the ongoing maintenance and operation of the pool for the next five years. This donation enables the new facility to continue as a safe, well-maintained, and accessible space for Marengo for years to come.
More than just a new swimming pool, we believe these projects are an investment in our community’s quality of life. We’re proud to be able to support Marengo’s desires to continue being a place where families want to stay, grow, and thrive.
