The City of Lincoln faced significant safety concerns due to a substantial increase in traffic volume along Humphrey Avenue. This uptick in vehicular flow heightened the risk of accidents, particularly at intersections where vehicles and pedestrians shared the space. Pedestrian safety was significantly compromised, with outdated infrastructure making it difficult for people to navigate busy crossings safely.
In response to these challenges, our intern team conducted a comprehensive analysis of the traffic patterns, accident reports, and pedestrian behaviors along the avenue. Based on this data, they proposed a solution incorporating mini roundabouts installation at key intersections. These roundabouts were designed to calm traffic, reduce speeds, and improve overall vehicle flow while minimizing conflict points.
In addition to the roundabouts, the team also recommended the construction of new curb ramps at critical pedestrian crossings to comply with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines. These ramps would provide safer, more accessible pathways for all pedestrians, including those with disabilities, elderly citizens, and parents with strollers.
This strategic approach aimed to improve safety and enhance the overall accessibility and mobility for the community. The proposed improvements were intended to be cost-effective and sustainable, with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment during construction.
