For nearly 50 years, the swimming pool at Fort Robinson State Park provided visitors a place to cool off, create memories, and enjoy one of Nebraska’s most treasured destinations. Originally opened in 1979, the aging facility had reached the end of its useful life and required significant repairs. Recognizing an opportunity to enhance the visitor experience, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) set out to create a new aquatic facility that honors Fort Robinson’s rich history while providing modern amenities for future generations.

JEO was engaged to help NGPC bring this vision to life. Through site visits, conversations with park staff, and a deeper exploration of Fort Robinson’s unique history, our team developed a design that celebrates the character and stories that make the park special. Every detail was thoughtfully considered to blend the new facility into its historic surroundings while creating an engaging recreational experience that entices visitors of all ages to learn, play and explore.

Historical elements are woven into recreational play throughout the space recognizing the importance of the many horses and livestock that have come from or currently live at Fort Robinson. The zero-depth entry hosts a slide honoring the Fort Robinson stagecoach, horseshoe bubblers, equestrian-themed spray features and a tipping water tower replica that pays tribute to familiar landmarks at Fort Robinson.

One of the facility’s most exciting features is the approximately 310-foot dual-track waterslides, allowing riders the opportunity to capture scenic views of the nearby bluffs as they race their partner to the plunge pool. Built into the hillside and surrounded by custom rockwork designed to replicate the nearby bluffs, this feature, with its unique open and enclosed dual racing flumes, is the first of its kind in Nebraska.

Supporting aquatic play and family enjoyment, the aquatic center includes custom shade and lounge amenities with a new bathhouse inspired by the historic architecture of the nearby Mare Barn Complex, famous as the birthing place for many of the U.S. Calvery horses through WWII. Recently restored and adjacent to the pool, it is currently used by park guests as they visit and enjoy the nearby trails with their equestrian companions.

The opening of the new aquatic facility in summer of 2026 came during a challenging time for Fort Robinson State Park following the South Fork Fire, which impacted thousands of acres across the park and surrounding areas. The new amenity provides a positive milestone for the park and an opportunity for visitors to gather and continue making memories in this historic setting.
