We were honored to be selected to lead the development of the Chariton City Lakes Master Plan—an ambitious, community-driven effort to reimagine Lake Ellis and Lake Morris as vibrant recreational and educational destinations. Once essential municipal water sources, these lakes are now at the heart of Chariton’s next chapter, rooted in the city’s deep history of coal mining, agriculture, and commerce.
After years of economic decline, Chariton began to experience a resurgence in the late 2010s, prompting renewed interest in its natural assets. When the city stopped using the lakes for water supply in 2019, the opportunity emerged to transform them into community gems. Our role was to help guide that transformation.
Working closely with city leaders, local stakeholders, and community members, we created a master plan that reflects a shared vision for the future: 700 acres of parkland and 224 acres of lake space designed to foster recreation, conservation, and connection.
The plan prioritizes inclusivity, sustainability, and economic vitality. It introduces high-use hubs with event spaces, accessible boat ramps, hiking trails, and camping options, balanced with tranquil areas dedicated to nature education, stargazing, and wildlife habitat. By protecting endangered species and native landscapes, while also creating spaces that invite community and tourism, the plan lays the foundation for long-term growth and engagement.
We’re proud to help Chariton reconnect with its natural surroundings and create new possibilities for its residents and visitors. This plan isn’t just about land and water—it’s about legacy, community pride, and building a vibrant future for generations to come.
The Chariton Lakes Master Plan won a Merit Award for the 2024 American Society of Landscape Architects Professional Awards.
