Helping Fremont take the first step
One example of this approach comes from Fremont, Nebraska. City leaders were eager to partner with community organizations to rehabilitate homes, but lacked the information needed to take the first step. Without a clear understanding of housing conditions across the city, it was difficult to know where to begin.
Our team worked with Fremont to complete a full housing condition inventory. Through a windshield survey, we evaluated the exterior condition of residential properties in the city. We identified vacant homes and lots, non-conforming structures, and areas that could benefit from a targeted investment. We also examined how flood damage from 2019 related to overall housing conditions, adding a layer of resiliency planning to the work.
To help Fremont put the data to use, our GIS team created an interactive dashboard. With just a smartphone, city staff can update housing and infrastructure conditions in real time, allowing for better tracking and easier planning.
With this new insight in hand, Fremont is now equipped to move forward—prioritizing projects, building partnerships, and investing in the future of its neighborhoods.
