The Challenge: In the early 2000s, the City of Glenwood, Iowa, closed and subsequently demolished its municipal outdoor swimming pool due to its poor physical condition and ongoing operation and maintenance costs. The facility was the only publicly-owned outdoor swimming pool in the immediate area, and community members wanted another, better pool to take its place.
The Solution: Our Aquatics team was hired by the city to design a new aquatic facility for their community and surrounding neighbors. The new pool is 8,700 square-feet and the bathhouse is 4,500 square-feet. The site is at the existing Glenwood Community High School and the new concessions/restroom area is positioned between the aquatic center and the soccer fields, so they get the most community use.
Project Benefits: The aquatic center focuses on accessibility with a zero-depth entry as well as a diversity of use with a 25-meter, six-lane lap pool. The pool goes above and beyond with a water playground and water walk which delight the children who visit. The new municipal swimming pool and its additional features make the aquatic center stand out and keep Glenwood a place where people want to live.
