Ankeny, IA – NW Irvinedale Drive Water Main Improvements

Engineering
Water Infrastructure

The Challenge: Ankeny, Iowa, is a rapidly growing suburb of Des Moines. The outskirts of Ankeny are in continual development and the city recently began work on a new Casey’s General Store. City officials needed a water main design for the new general store that conforms with its existing construction to allow for its opening in August of 2019.

The Solution: Our water infrastructure intern team, spread out among three different cities, coordinated remotely to design a layout for a water main accessible to the new store. The design routed 850 feet of 12” diameter pipe near the new store. The pipe tied into an existing water main south of the store, ran through a casing pipe laid out in the store design, avoided existing storm sewers and utilities, and ended north of the new store.

Project Benefits: The general store is a valuable convenience for the surrounding community that couldn’t open without a water connection. Our design allows for the timely opening of the new store while minimizing negative impacts on the new construction and surrounding community. Further development near the store will be able to tie into the water main, providing water to the city as it continues to grow.
