York Wellhead Protection Plan

York Wellhead Protection Plan 2017-06-08T14:32:23+00:00

In an effort to proactively manage and protect the City’s source of drinking water (groundwater), the City of York applied for grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality through the Source Water Protection Grant  Program in fall 2014.

The grant application consisted of the following objectives:

  1. Establish an NDEQ approved Wellhead Protection Plan (WHPP)
  2. Develop a Wellhead Protection Ordinance
  3. Provide educational information and opportunities to the public to protect groundwater

In the spring of 2015 the City’s grant application was approved and the City has contracted with JEO Consulting Group to assist in the development of the project. Over the course of a year the plan has been in development, with guidance being provided by a local planning team which consist of representatives from business, agriculture, the Upper Big Blue NRD, and other local entities. The plan is anticipated to be finalized and adopted summer of 2016 after the public has had  multiple opportunities to review and comment. A public house and public hearing are planned for these purposes.
