JEO mourns the loss of Terry O’Brien (the “O” in JEO)

Terry O’Brien, the “O” in JEO, passed away overnight Saturday, August 20th.

Terry joined JEO in 1971. During his years with JEO, Terry made significant contributions to the engineering community. He is a life member of both the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Water Environment Federation (WEF). He has run through the leadership ranks of the Nebraska Chapter of the American Consulting Engineers Council (ACEC) and American Water Works Association (AWWA). In 2001, O’Brien was presented the Fuller Award by AWWA and in 1983 the Arthur Sidney Bedell Award by WEF, both for his contribution of time and energy to water and wastewater issues in Nebraska.

Terry retired from full time employment in 2006 and from the board of directors several years later. He was still a member of the JBC board. Although retired for just over 10 years now, Terry’s legacy lives on in many ways, most importantly in his commitment to do right all the time. Another legacy of Terry that lives on today is his commitment to teaching. He performed at his absolute peak until the day he retired. Yet when he left, we didn’t miss a beat thanks to his constant sharing of knowledge and helping people develop their careers.

Outside of work, Terry enjoyed fishing, woodworking, yard work, coin collecting, PEZ collecting, and spending time in Spicer, Minnesota at the cabin their family bought during his retirement after spending many years vacationing there.

He is survived by children: Cory (Diane) O’Brien of Wahoo and Marnie O’Brien of Lincoln; granddaughter Katelyn O’Brien of Omaha; brother Dan (Bonnie) O’Brien of Hayden Lake, ID; sister-in-law Colleen Bowers of Dekalb, IL; nieces, nephews, and granddogs.

He was preceded in death by wife Valerie O’Brien; parents Arthur and Florence O’Brien; brother Richard O’Brien.

Please keep Terry’s family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace TAO.
