The International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) has certified Steven Wolf as a Master Certified Public Participation Professional (MCP3). This certification is the first of its kind in the public participation profession. IAP2 has more than 3,000 members worldwide, and over 800 of those are in the United States.
Steven Wolf, MCP3, is the first and among only two others in North America to be awarded this certification. After more than 35 years in the public participation profession, Steven is honored to have achieved the certification and thrilled by the progress of his profession.
“This certification process was like climbing a mountain with more than 100 hours of effort across the three evaluation phases to reach the top,” he said. “It has been a humbling experience to be the first in North America to earn this recognition. I can only begin to thank the leadership at JEO for supporting this endeavor.”
Steven and two others were chosen by the IAP2 from a larger applicant pool to participate in the organization’s inaugural certification process, which consisted of an in-depth application and both a written and oral test of skills and application of IAP2 principles. A fundamental requirement for basic certification is that the applicant must demonstrate their core competencies across 42 mandatory criteria. For the master’s level certification, the applicant must also demonstrate the use of a wide range of public participation strategies and tactics. All three participants achieved a master’s level certification.
In the absence of other professional certifications in the public participation profession, the completion of this pilot certification process is a significant accomplishment for both the IAP2 and the profession. As IAP2 USA Board Member and Chair of the Certification Program Task Force Wendy Lowe describes, IAP2 is now able to evaluate and certify which public participation professionals have the essential skills for practicing authentic work.
