June 22, 2013 was a groundbreaking day for Aurora, Nebraska. Literally.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Aurora aquatic center took place during Aurora’s A’ROR’N Days to signify the beginning of the construction of the $3.5 million aquatic center project. A flatbed filled with dirt from the aquatic center construction site was pulled to Central Park Square where JEO’s Dave Henke joined the mayor, city administrators, public works director, Dick Phillips, and others in throwing the first shovels of dirt from the site.

The decision to build a new aquatic center has been a long time in the making. With the construction for the center finally beginning adjacent to the old pool, the proposed time frame has the center set to open early in the summer of 2014.
